There are 3 main types of rats in North America and many of the times, you wont see the rat until its dead.

Not saying that you can't see them, but keep in mind there are millions of rats in North America.

They just did a large study in England to try to determine just how many rats there were in their country.

After a large study they found about 60 million rats in England.  That is about 1 for every person.

You would think you would see them everywhere, but you don't.

In fact, you may never see them, but that doesn't mean you don't have them.

Norway Rat

Is the most common. ( Rattus norvegicus )
Brown fur or brownish dirty fur with a blunt nose and a small ears.  They are stocky but rats have no shoulder blades so their bodies can fit through very small holes.

So, you don't have to look for necessarily large holes only.  They can fit through the size of quarter.  It can weigh up to 1 lb and its tail is shorter than its total body length.

Great at clawing and building huge, complicated tunnels underground and prefers darker, damper conditions.

Roof Rat

Still fairly common in United States and Canada.  ( Rattus rattus )

Black in color not the brownish/grey that the Norway Rat is.

Usually the smaller and more slender of the 2 rats.  With big ears and more pointed nose and face.  Its tail is longer than its overall body size and it loves to climb.  Now, all rats can climb and they are survivors, they can often climb up a wall straight.

But the Roof Rat is a super climber and prefers to live in trees and thicker bushes and vegetation.  It will take over and infests attics, upper balconies, roofs and top floors of building.

Warning and Dangers Of Rats.
